Cat Bird
A 16' Flat-Bottom Jib-Headed Catboat
By William & John Atkin
A Flat Bottom Cat Boat
We have complete plans this month of an excellent little boat. Incorporated in the design we have the simplicity of a flat bottomed hull and the handy rig of the cat boat -- one mast, one stay, two shrouds, one halyard, one topping lift, one main sheet, and of course a single sail; this of jib-head simplicity. In the design as a whole I have made every effort to produce for amateur and professional boat builders an easily constructed craft.
The dimensions of the subject of this month's design work out as follows: Length over all, 16 feet 0 inches; water line length, 15 feet 3 1/2 inches; breadth on deck, 5 feet 5 inches; breadth on bottom, 4 feet 2 inches; draft, 0 feet 6 inches. The freeboard at the bow is 2 feet 2 1/2 inches, the least freeboard, 1 foot 4 1/2 inches, and the freeboard at the stern, 1 foot 8 inches. It may be of interest to mention that the depth of the hull amidships is 1 foot 10 inches. Cat Bird carries 149 square feet of canvas in her single jib-head mainsail.
Measured by rule or by the inherent pleasure wrapped in her frames, planking, thwarts, rig, and ability. Cat Bird will be by the first of these measurements a little boat. She is only 16 feet long; but measured by the pleasurable aspect of the undertaking she will be by this second gauge much more in capacity than a little boat. So, Shipmates, you can see there is far more than the eye can see in this matter of practical little-big boats.
