Uarda
A 16' 10" V-Bottom Utility Runabout
By William & John Atkin
A V-Bottom Inboard Utility Boat
This month there comes over the horizon the plans for a popular type of motor boat. In overall length she is 16 feet 10 inches; in waterline length, 15 feet 6 inches; in breadth, 5 feet 8 inches; and in draft, 1 foot 3 1/2 inches. Now, don't be misled by the bare overall dimensions, because this new Uarda is deceptive in this particular. At the bow the freeboard is 2 feet 5 inches; at the lowest point, 1 foot 5 3/4 inches; and at the stern, 1 foot 9 5/8 inches. The depth of the hull from the sheer line to the top of the keel is 2 feet 1 inch and greatest breadth of the chine is a little over 4 feet 8 inches. Add to this the average height of the coamings and one finds that there will be a comfortable feeling of being in the boat rather than on it.
When one is sitting down, the tops of the coamings come even with the armpits; and when standing up? Well, people in small boats should stand up only for the briefest length of time; and I might add for the preservation of safety, people aboard while the boat is under way should not be balanced on the bow, or sitting on the decks, or dangling off the stern.
The motor specified is a Universal Atomic Four of 64 cubic inch cylinder displacement and developing 22 horsepower turning 3,000 r.p.m. With this motor the speed of the boat will be a good 17 miles an hour. Other motor manufacturers produce motors of approximately the capacity of the motor specified. The performance of the boat will be excellent with any of these motors as the power plant for Uarda.
